The Kraken RPG MP

Post by jb »

The Kraken RPG is a project that I was unable to finish. I've decided to release it in hopes that someone would pick it up and maintain it. It is 95% playable, there are some minor bugs that are harmless...but the main bug is in the final boss, it crashes for many users.

An all star cast of Wesnoth regulars worked on this project, but it was aborted for various reasons. As I said, i'm releasing it in hopes that someone picks it up. Regardless, it is still an excellent RPG map that is very challanging and has an adult theme.

This RPG is designed to be played with any era that starts with level 1 units.

If anyone is interested in maintaining this RPG, please contact me.

Those who worked on this project include: Bob the Mighty, Mythological, Rhuvean, & Zookeeper.

The engine doesn't like it when you delete units from the AI's side in the middle of its moves, hence the crashing. The simplest fix? Spawn the kraken with canrecruit=1, which seems to cause the AI to consider its moves separately from any of the tentacles. This may lead to unwanted AI behavior however (I tried it and the final battle worked perfectly OK, except the kraken was more interested in grabbing villages, even after I set the village value for that side's AI down to 0). A slightly more involved workaround would be to commandeer one of the other AI sides and use that for the kraken while keeping the tentacles on side 9. It makes a lot more sense if the kraken moves first anyhow.

For that matter, if you don't really care about which direction the tentacles face you can just use [teleport] instead of having to delete units and then recreate them through [unstore_unit]. However, putting them on two sides seems to be the most desirable solution since you can guarantee the kraken moves first.

Under no circumstances can this claim

That is all.

Edit: And I still think the Kraken should be represented by a moving series of hills and impassable mountains surrounded by tentacles... so there.
I suspect having one foot in the past is the best way to understand the present.

I am very glad you decided to upload this at last. It was good fun last time we played it, and tough too.

*Sigh*

Woodmouse, did you bother to check both add-on servers before you posted? I already know the answer is no. It is at the bottom of the 1.4 add-on server, same place as all the other new add-ons.

Oops, sorry. :oops: I checked the addon server of 1.4.6, but I didn't look at the bottom... Because I was stupid. :oops:

@TL Thanks for the advice, and thanks for playing. Sadly, I won't be going back to this project, but at least you've given a WML compass.

Well, I'm not glad about releasing an unpolished product, but there was so much work that we put into it that it would be a shame to never put it out there :)

I don't care what you, and the team, and the players, and the forum posters, and the cable news channels, and others say about Zookeeper. I don't believe any of that stuff, and he's ok with me!

@woodsmouse - yes it's on the stable server, 1.4.x

But seriously people, I want you to all download the Kraken, play with it and help fix it...

If reviving a six-year-old thread counts as necromancy, then so be it. The fact is I've actually ported this scenario across several versions, cleaned it up and rewrote the final boss battle. It's now available for 1.12. I've also made it fully compatible with Bob's RPG Era, so there's shops and special items all over the place.

I always thought it was a shame this scenario never got properly finished off as it is a great adventure. You can expect an epic story, some amusing characters, some great skirmish battles and an intense boss fight with some novel features.

The Kraken awakes once more!

<slow clap>

Very impressive Bob. A six year resurrection. That has to be a new record.

"Did you every know that you're my hero? You are the wind beneath my wings"
"There goes my hero, watch him as he goes"
"I need a hero, he's gotta be strong and he's gotta fast, and he's gotta be fresh from the fight"
"A working class hero is something to be (but your still f#----g peasants as far as I can see)"
"We can beat them, just for one day. We can be heroes, just for one day."

Really enjoying this, great work (I've got three of the items so far, not got to the boss).

Still some things require to change/fix (what when 2 units die in same place? You can scavenge only one), options in shops to sell items (even useless one - can be by 1g), more units classes are required xP!

Some of players are likely to remake game everytime when one of teammates dies, other prefer to continue it. With little help of 3rd lvl dwarv I have defeated yetis (dwarv died then at end of battle), later solo trollish king, and solo kraken.

Is there any way to not fight with yetis? To not spawn them? Once they appear they keep chasing you :D... Played in different nick.
