GPL violation

Post by iyo »

Someone is selling Battle for Wesnoth on the Google Play store without mentioning the GPL or where I can get the code. If I understand anything about the GPL, that should be a clear violation.

Wrong forum. Game Development is about other games, so I moved this to Users’ instead.

Now can we actually get a link, screenshot, or something? Because I somehow suspect you mean this one, which we know about already (even before it was first released) and is maintained by a member of the mainline development team.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum.

Yes, the game you linked is the one I am talking about. However, I fail to see how the fact that the person putting it on Google play is part of the mainline development team is relevant with respect to the GPL violation. The GPL license is "sticky", meaning that any code based on GPL code automatically is GPL code as well, even if it was written by the same developer as the original code. Thus, putting Battle for Wesnoth on Google play is a clear GPL violation even if done by a mainline developer. The responsible person should make the code available immediately and mention the fact that the game is under GPL and where to get the source code on the Google play site asap.

Perhaps you should PM him (cjhopman) in the forums then? Hopefully without claiming that putting it in the store is an automatic violation of the GNU GPL, of course.

Wasn't it written in GPL that you can distribute the software for money (so that the money is only for the distribution, so you cannot prevent them users from giving it to others, but can sell it for money)?
